Delta Dunarii
The following images are a selection of digis, taken across the Danube Delta in Summer 2010.
In Letea, you find two crosses standing right next to the water. What on first sight looks like a perfect place for a Romanian Romeo and Juliet finale, the real story is slightly less romantic: it is the place where two Romanian youngsters had a fatal boatcrash while driving to/from the Disco; highly unlikely, indeed.
However, one must not be surprised by strange happenings in this slightly outerworldly place called Letea, located just in the middle of knowhere.
it is sporting a church...
the main road is sandy, as the huge dune just behind the village
horses
wooden structures and unique architecture
which is traditionally made of "stuf" - if you want to know more about it, you can try to get the Fotobook (which also has very informative writing in English: Stuf. Case Traditionale Din Delta Dunarii. isbn 978 973 88404 8 - Photos by Serban Bonciocat
and a fantastic lodge, which is also highly unlikely to be exactly located where it is.
If you still dont have any plans for summer i highly recommend visiting this area, and staying in the lodge. For 30 Euros a night you get the best food between Bucharest and Odessa (really, it is incredible), free drinks and a unique experience. It is run by a man stemmin from Brasov, and one employee, a biologist who decided to become a cook after the fishing industry in Sulina went down. She certainly made the right decision.
Check it out HERE
We were luckily invited to join in on a speedboatride, and on some more fish
you will find a huge population of birds and frogs - you really have to wach your step.
you can hire some locals who take you to the pelicano colonies, and although i am certainly not a bird buff, it is quite impressive to see flocks of pelicanoes flying away.
In the area around Sfantu Gheorge you will also find better and even quite posh touristic facilities like this on:
but also beautiful canals:
Heading back to Tulcea, you can stop in Mahmudia, where you can stop at the Discoteca Paradis
which is certainly a real highlight once the black light is turned on.
Although Tulcea is not a bad place, it is rather not worth to spend too much time there - unless you arrive from the Ukraine. You might as well find out yourself why.
and one nostalgic image from Letea, just to complete this entry...
